The Santa Winter Games tradition began in the deep forest near the homestead-area in Gällivare. Santa families, Old man Winter and Lady frost entertained the young and spread joy around them. Santas competed in the quiet but in 2003 Gällivares own Santa, Sivert decided to make this a public event and share the fun and let everyone see the competitions. So they moved the games to the square in the centre of Gällivare, and there we had the first Santa Winter Games!

Since 2011 Visit Gellivare Lapland
is the organizer of Santa Winter Games.

Our History

We welcome you to our hometown, a place where you can find both relaxing silence and exhilarating action. Every season has its charm and there are always plenty of things to see and do in Gällivare, no matter the season. In Gällivare, the mining industry is the backbone of society and two of the world’s most high-tech mines are situated here, LKAB and Aitik. From high-tech companies to deafening silence in 20 minutes, that’s the contrast you find in Gällivare. Because in our hometown, the wilderness is just around the corner.
